GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey has consistently found that when LGBTQI+ youth report that their school has an anti-bullying policy that enumerates and expressly prohibit bullying and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity, they are less likely to report they harassment and bullying. GLSEN advocates for policies that ensure that transgender, nonbinary, and intersex students have equal opportunity to participate in all K-12 school sports in a way that aligns with their gender identity. This map examines state policies impacting equal opportunity to participate in school sports consistent with gender identity with a focus on high school interscholastic athletic participation.
State nondiscrimination policies that expressly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in educational programs (including K-12 schools) set a standard for equal educational opportunity. Federal nondiscrimination protections apply to all federally funded schools, including all public schools and many private K-12 schools, regardless of the state. Source: GLSEN
